What Is Power Factor and Why It's Crucial Power Factor measures how efficiently your electrical system uses electricity. You pay for Active Power (kW) — the electricity that does actual work. But equipment like motors, transformers and lighting also generates Reactive Power (kVAR), which does no useful work yet still has to be supplied by the utility. As reactive power increases, your power factor drops — meaning you're drawing more electricity than necessary and paying more for it.
